Designed in 1966. It was mass-produced from 1966 to 1982. It was in service with the Soviet Army, the armies of the Warsaw Treaty countries and a number of developing countries. Used in battles in the Middle East and in the Republic of Afghanistan.

Design features

The base is original.

General layout – the power plant is located in the front, the landing compartment – in the back. Armament – a smoothbore gun has an electromechanical drive and a loading mechanism with a conveyor for ammunition; ATGM (PTUR) installed on the guide frame located on the mask of the gun.

Protection – welded hull and turret made of rolled steel sheets; the housing has side niches protruding above the tracks; a nuclear weapons protection system and an automatic fire fighting equipment system were installed.

Chassis – six-cylinder engine, liquid-cooled diesel; mechanical transmission, consisting of a multi-disk main clutch of dry friction, a five-speed gearbox, two planetary two-stage steering mechanisms and two final drives.
